How to Drive a Race Car

Dr. Talbot driving his Formula Ford race car

The unique challenges of race car driving can be difficult for young drivers. A race car travels at speeds in excess of 180 mph with frequent pit stops needed for refueling and tire changes. There are many tips to driving a race car along high-banked corners and past the competition to the finish line.

Instructions

    • 1
Adhere to the basic tenet of driving by avoiding braking and turning at the same time. The act of making a left turn and applying brakes redistributes weight in your race car that can cause a slide out. Ease off of the throttle instead of applying the brakes on turns to stay in the race.
    • 2
Keep your throttle steady until you reach the limit point in your race car. The limit point in racing is the exact spot at each turn where visibility beyond an angled corner is diminished by traffic.
    • 3
Rest your back against your racing seat to maintain steady steering as you drive a race car. Your back should be flat against the seat to ensure your hands are resting on the steering wheel throughout the entire race.
    • 4
Apply a slight amount of pressure to your brakes during a race to prevent locking during an emergency. Young drivers have the tendency to slam on the brakes which contributes to the sliding, skidding and locking responsible for most crashes.
    • 5
Move away from a reliance on your side mirrors as you learn to drive a race car. The side mirrors are smaller on a race car than a regular vehicle to cut down on wind resistance. Learn to use quick head checks and forward vision to deal with changing traffic on the track.
    • 6
Maintain inside position as long as possible to prevent passing on your left. Take advantage of the shorter distance on the inside lane by accelerating quickly and watching for competition on the outside.
    • 7
Note the tendencies of fellow drivers during the first few laps to make quick decisions come crunch time. A smart driver will keep track of a competitor's tendency to bump, draft and pass to plan moves ahead of the final flag.

      Tips & Warnings

Register at a racing school run by former professionals, such as the Mario Andretti Racing School, the Jim Russel Racing School or Danny McKeever's Fast Lane Racing School if you're really serious about learning. Check out RaceSchools.com for a listing of schools around the country (see Resources below).

Test out your skills as a race car driver by taking your vehicle to an open day at a local track. These open days are designed for racing fans who want to get down on the track, meet drivers and see the challenges of the sport firsthand.

Do not drive in a race until you are competent. You risk serious injury or death if you drive at high speeds without adequate experience and training.

How to Buy a Custom Fit Car Cover

Car covers generally fall into 3 different categories: universal ready-fit, semi-custom, and custom. Custom car covers are manufactured for a specific year, make, model, and body type vehicle and offer the best protection, best overall fit, and best warranties

Steps
1
Make sure you know the exact year, make, model, body type, and trim of the vehicle you are purchasing a custom car cover for. This is essential information. If you don't know this information, you won't be able to purchase a custom car cover.
2
Decide what you want to protect your vehicle from. Different custom car covers protect against different threats. If you're most concerned about water, make sure you buy a waterproof car cover. If you're more concerned about protection from the sun and harmful UV rays, a custom reflective car cover might be your best choice.
3
Decide on a budget. The cost of a custom car cover will vary by both manufacturer and retailer. Once you set a budget for your custom car cover, you will be able to narrow down your options.
4
Find and compare multiple retailers. You can use shopping comparison engines like Nextag or Google Shopping to compare retailers. Don't forget to read all the product details.
5
If you have any questions or doubts about the product you're ordering, contact the retailer. Because custom car covers are made to order, they usually cannot be returned so make sure you purchase the correct cover the first time.

Tips
Covercraft and Coverking are the most popular custom car cover manufacturers in the United States. If you are shopping around you and find Covercraft or Coverking car covers, it is a safe bet that they are true custom covers and not universal read-fit covers.

Warnings
Be careful of online retailers and eBay sellers that advertise custom car covers. In general, anyone advertising a car cover for less than $150 is most likely selling a universal ready-fit car cover and not a true custom car cover.
Stay away from retailers that offer lifetime warranties. There is no such thing as a custom car cover that lasts forever. Any retailer offering a lifetime warranty is using it as a marketing gimmick.
Stay away from mass retailers and auto parts stores like Autozone, Pep Boys, and Walmart. They sell universal ready-fit car covers, not custom car covers.

How do you recognize faulty wheel bearings?

As the name implies, wheel bearings are the bearings on which the wheels of a vehicle are attached. They ensure that the wheels run smoothly. Wheel bearings are one of the wear parts. This means that the wheel bearings must be replaced regardless of any breakdown statistics in due course.
From outside, no discernible wear on the wheel bearings:
 car wheel bearing
From the outside, damage or wear is not visible, because the wheel bearings are mounted on the inside of the rim. The result of worn wheel bearings is an uneven running of the wheels, this one does not feel at first, but you can hear it.
Especially in curves obtained by swiftly moves, a noise sounds similar to the rapid tapping of a woodpecker. The higher the velocity is, the louder the noise. To locate the defective wheel bearing one pays most to what occurs in the noise curve. When a defect occurs on the right side of the noise in right-handers, it silenced in left turns. Later come the sounds to even bend-free ride.
Defective or worn wheel bearings create a vehicle is not stopped immediately, but the noise is very unpleasant with time. Due to the uneven movement of the wheels is due to the reduced stability of the wheels also increases the rolling resistance, which is detrimental to fuel consumption.
In advanced stages of wear may be a canting of the wheel bearing the sequence, so that further movement impossible.
A change of the wheel bearings should only make those with expertise on repairs and maintenance of motor vehicles. Thus, a transition to the next workshop is usually inevitable.

Infinity Basslink 200-Watt, Dual 10" Powered Subwoofer System

Product Description

The BassLink line includes everything you need for great bass in your car, with no hassle. This system includes a round 10-inch woofer, a round 10-inch passive radiator and a 200-watt Class D amplifier, plus all the controls you need to integrate its sound with your existing system. It can be mounted vertically or horizontally for easy placement in any car.
Powered Subwoofer System

Designed to deliver low frequencies in virtually any car audio system, BassLink truly has universal appeal. Small in size but big in output, BassLink requires a mere .75 cubic feet of trunk space yet produces enough bass to wake up the neighborhood.
BassLink consists of a 10-inch subwoofer, 10-inch passive radiator and a 200-watt Class D amplifier housed in a rigid polymer enclosure, all carefully engineered to work together as a unique, integrated system. The extremely versatile BassLink accepts both speaker- and line-level inputs, and it provides an internal low-pass filter, proprietary signal processing and abundant amplification.
The BassLink system features a servo-control circuit that continually monitors the voice coil's position in the magnetic gap and prevents the distortion that occurs when a conventional woofer is overdriven. By integrating cone-excursion information with the instantaneous demands of the music, BassLink can extract loud and deep bass from an enclosure smaller than any before.
BassLink includes a fixed, 2nd-order, high-pass filter that eliminates the possibility of over-excursion below Fb, the resonant (tuned) frequency of the vented box. This allows the excursion-monitoring circuit to focus on the excursion at the more meaningful frequencies at and above Fb. The result is a significant increase in bass output.
User-adjustable controls allow listeners to set the system's response to achieve optimum performance based on the vehicle's cabin gain or transfer function. These controls include: a 0- or 180-degree phase switch; a continuously variable electronic low-pass filter that is adjustable between 70 and 100Hz; variable input sensitivity; and Bass EQ that provides for adjustments between +3 and -6dB. BassLink's frequency response in a typical vehicle is 20 to 100Hz (+/-3dB), but this varies according to the vehicle and user adjustments. At maximum gain, the system can accept inputs as low as 250mV.
BassLink can accept up to four channels of input--to provide nonfading bass--either from line-level signals through four RCA jacks or from high-level signals through a pair of Molex connectors, allowing BassLink to be easily connected to OEM systems. If using the speaker-level inputs, an audio-sense circuit will turn on the amplifier whenever a signal is present. If the RCAs are used, a 12-volt, remote-turn-on lead is required. The system has barrier strip connections for power, ground and remote turn-on.

Product Features

  • Powered subwoofer with onboard 200-Watt Class D amplifier
  • Variable electronic crossover (50Hz to 120Hz), sensitivity, and bass-boost
  • 10-Inch subwoofer and 10-inch passive radiator
  • Variable Bass EQ (+3db to -6 db at 45Hz)
  • Includes Basslink LC remote bass-level control

Customer Reviews

This GPS is awesome!!! I have struggled with trying to interface handheld GPS to my laptop for a couple of years. I live aboard a sailboat in the Caribbean using navigation software to plan my passages and have been frustrated trying to use my handheld GPS input which resulted in continual problems. That has all been changed using this new GPS and couldn't be happier with it's ease of installation and awesome performance. It picks up the signal below at my nav station, aquires quickly and performs without causing any problems with my computer. I have tried several systems and this unit outperforms them and I cannot recommend this unit highly enough, you will not be sorry...
